WEEK TWENTY-SIX - 'WUTHERING HEIGHTS'

'Wuthering Heights' by Emily Brontë
June 24 - 27, 245 pages

I did it. I finally did it. Over the past two and a half years I have had three failed attempts at reading this book. I just could not get into it and eventually tossed it aside each time.

But I couldn't let it beat me.

I did start to get interested in the plot after one hundred or so pages but in no way was I hooked. I guess it just came down to the fact that deep down I didn't really care what happened to the characters. I didn't like any of them. Except maybe Nelly.

I am glad I read it, though. I can see why it's a classic. It is well-written and insightful. Complex and thorough.

I might have to take a break before embarking on more Brontë sisters' books though.

And at week twenty-six I am halfway through the year without missing a week yet!

  1. I remember I got 'Wuthering Heights' as a birthday present, after my friends and I grew a liking for Kate Bush's song about it. I remember being so excited, however had to put if down after half and hour of trying to understand the first page. However, I finally got into the rhythm of it 6 months later. I found it quite good, however Catherine and Heathcliffe's relationship seemed only to be a section of the whole story, and no where did I pick it up as some heated, forbidden, great passionate affair, as much of popular culture conveys it to be.

I found Catherine to be rather annoying and thought she and Heathcliff would do the world a favour if they ran off together and never showed their faces again, especially to poor Edgar Linton. My favourite character was Mr Lockwood because he always said the wrong things at the wrong time - I guess I like awkward characters a lot.

Needless to say, Kate Bush's song doesn't seem as fantastic ever since I read the book. However I still love it.

  2. Wow great analysis! You should do one of these blogs too! I completely agree with what you say about Heathcliff and Catherine. Could not stand them. And also that the book definitely fell short of the intense and 'almost demonic' love that the blurb promised.
